Now a steadfast Londoner, Ellie cut her teeth in Manchester’s 2009-era dubstep circuit, documenting the UK’s indecisive sartorial timeline through digital archiving and a plastic wallet home to what she fondly names “shrapnel.” Garms + Sets landed on Instagram in 2021, just as dancefloors were reopening and everyone was remembering how to leave the house again. Since then, it’s become a catalogue of the hat (or cap) tips that connect today’s dancefloor to the early noughties underground.
“I’ve always been more fascinated with subculture than I am with design,” shares Ellie, referencing the “characterisation” of the origin days. Instantly, pixelated avatars animate in front of my eyes. No well dressed selecta standing resolute at the helm of the CDJs can escape Ellie’s cam, but she’s not one for chasing the “hero” shots exclusively. The NPCs outside the venue are just as much a part of that world building.
